Mr. Darcy is a superior gentleman, clever, and bored at being dragged to a dusty corner of Hertfordshire by his friend. His only solace is to ferret out conundrums to solve among the neighbors to enliven his mind. Then he finds Elizabeth’s eyes a distraction from these mysteries.
The pair find themselves in Scarborough because horrible news forces their family parties to that city to seek refuge. However, Elizabeth and Darcy are thrown together because Elizabeth’s youngest sister, Lydia, and Darcy’s sister, Georgiana, form an instant friendship.
Darcy’s growing love for Elizabeth leads to a disastrous proposal as she believes him selfish and dismissive of everyone. They both return to their own counties brooding over the encounter. Despite their desire never to see each other, their lives continue to be connected because of their sisters’ friendship. Recognizing their shortcomings, the pair meet again in London during a frosty climax on the icy Thames in the winter of 1814.
